MINE ALONE

MINE ALONE

The sea displays
Its treasures rare,
Upon the sandy
Shore once bare.
And waves protect
With splashing flair
From would be thieves
Who wander there.

I wandered there
Myself one day,
To see what might be
On display.
Storms left the beach
In disarray
And I found shells
To take away.

But this the sea
Did not condone.
Before I took them
As my own,
The waves proclaimed
With angry moan,
"This wealth is mine
And mine alone."

Without warning
Waves crashed the shore
With a ferocious
Thund'rous roar.
And when I rose
Amused but sore,
The cherished shells
Were there no more.
